The Importance of Reading God's Word
Jesus said that man does not live by bread alone but by every Word that proceeds from the mouth of God. The Word of God is found in the Bible. It is vital that we feed on this Word often to keep good relations with God.
A regular helping of spiritual food (that is God’s Word) is necessary to keep our spirits healthy just as eating meals on a regular basis is necessary to keep our physical bodies healthy and alive.
Some Benefits of Reading God’s Word
By continually filling our hearts and minds with the Word of God, we take in what is good and equip ourselves to counter the negativity.
1. Find a translation that’s easy for you to understand.
The commonly used Kings James Version is great but difficult to understand by many. If this version does not
work for you, try the New King James or New International Version.
2. Read Chapter by Chapter
By reading chapter by chapter, readers get an understanding of events that happened during the same time period. Don’t think that you need to read the entire chapter in one sitting. A little each day is better than none at all.
For those newly trying this method, I suggest beginning with the Book of John and then the remainder of the New Testament.
3. Read by Topic
Most Bibles these days have a concordance or index with topics and corresponding scriptures listed in the back. Try selecting a topic like “love” and reading every scripture that’s listed under that topic.
4. Read a Proverb
There are 31 proverbs. Readers can go through a proverb each day. In February and months with only 30 days, readers may want to read more than one proverb a day.
5. Purchase a One-Year Bible
This is the method I use most often. This Bible version separates an Old Testament passage, a New Testament Passage, a Psalm, and a Proverb into 365 day sections so that readers can read through the entire Bible in one year’s time.
6. Read first thing in the morning
By reading first in the morning, readers not only make sure that they get the necessary spiritual food, they also prepare themselves for challenges we often face on a daily basis.
In some instances, people prefer lunchtime or nighttime to read an this may work for you, but in most people I know who read the Word of God on a regular basis, mornings tend to work best.
7. Don’t be hard on yourself
It’s ideal to read on a daily basis, but if readers miss a day from time to time don’t beat yourself up. Begin again as soon as you can.
On the same note, don’t keep putting reading off for other things. There will always be other things to do. This is another reason mornings typically work best.
Remember the digestion of spiritual food (God’s Word) on a regular basis is necessary to maintain a healthy spirit as digestion of physical food is to keeping a healthy body.

Some Benefits of Reading God’s Word
- It helps maintain a pure heart and mind.
- What comes out of our hearts and minds is a direct result of what we have taken in. In today’s society, we are overwhelmed with images of sexual promiscuity, profanity, negativity, and all sorts of indecency.
By continually filling our hearts and minds with the Word of God, we take in what is good and equip ourselves to counter the negativity.
- It prepares us to share with others
- The Bible tells us to study the Word of God that we might understand it and that we will be prepared to explain to anyone who asks the reason we believe in Jesus.
